The Transfiguration (year 1998)

This gold medal of the Vatican was minted in 1998 and is the seventh in the series. Inaugurates the third trilogy dedicated to the Trinity. The beautiful art gallery of the Vatican Museums, preserve this magnificent Transfiguration of the great Raphael (1483 - 1520), painted in homage of this medal. It is great altarpiece and it is the artist's latest work completely signed. At the top of the painting is represented the Transfiguration of Christ on Mount Tabor. His figure stands out against the backdrop of a sky studded with clouds and pierced by a brilliant Divine Light. This image according to a solicitation of the Pope, is an invitation to reflect on the person of Christ, the Son of God made man.
In the "straight" is reproduced the central detail of the painting, Christ in the act of asceticism with the writing "La Trasfigurazione".
In the "reverse" is represented the "La Madonna col Bambino" by Giovanni Battista Salvi (1605 -1685), known as Sassoferrato. This painting is also part of the Pinacoteca of the Vatican Museums since 1857. The caption reads: "Madonna col Bambino * Sassoferrato" and "Musei Vaticani VII Anno 1998".
